Air segmented continuous flow analyzers have achieved a high level of success since the 1970’s. The technology provided the wherewithal for laboratory analysts to process a large number of samples for the most common environmental pollutants in a cost effective manner. It is important to note that this automated technology was one the first to be approved by the U.S. EPA as well as other regulatory agencies for routine testing.
The strength of air-segmented continuous flow analyzers is the ability to handle complex methods requiring on-line sample pretreatments. These include:
| Sample Pretreatment | Examples |
| Digestion (95°C) | Total Phosphate |
| Distillation (155°C) | Fluoride. Phenol, Sulfide, Volatile Acidity |
| UV digestion | Total Phosphorus |
| UV digestion/Cd-reduction | Total Organic Carbon |
| UV digestion/distillation | Total Cyanide |
| Ion-exchange | Sulfate |
| Liquid/liquid extraction | MBAS |
